Self driving thru Zambia

Vehicles drive on the left side of the road in Zambia – and most other traffic laws are the same as you’d find in any country.
Speed bumps are used to slow traffic in populated areas – but be careful as these are usually not marked. On some of the major roads, speed bumps can pop up out of nowhere, even if you feel the area is not populated at all.
Hence, we suggest to not drive fast or at night. Please travel cautiously on un-gazetted roads or dirt roads and take excessive care where bad-tarred road conditions exist

Ultimate Road Trip

Road blocks and police check points are common in Zambia, and officers are generally very friendly – so be sure to respond in a similar fashion and as a courtesy take off your sunglasses. Officers will generally either ask for cross-border papers (like 3rd party insurance) or your driver’s license. They will also check your vehicle from time to time to make sure everything is in working order, such as headlights, and an up-to-date licence disk. So know where the car papers are stored and check this upon handover of the vehicle.

Fully kitted 4x4 vehicles

In Zambia there are no Roadside Assistance Packages and very few ambulances, tow-trucks, or emergency vehicles of any kind. Given the circumstances, bush mechanics are extremely resourceful.

Check your vehicle often, a quick daily maintenance of the vehicle (i.e. oil checks, coolant level, tyre pressure, etc.) is part of your adventure!
Don't worry, we will give you more tips upon booking!

Being Adventurous

Self driving thru Zambia

4x4 Driving in Zambia

The country of Zambia covers various terrains and has large stretches or rural areas and natural habitats. For this reason road conditions vary dramatically.

As you move away from city centres, driving can be tricky as some roads are in disrepair or poor conditions. Paved roads also make way for dirt roads which require a certain amount of concentration and responsible driving – but slower speeds and alert drivers make for a much smoother journey.

4WD vehicles are generally recommended for dirt roads – but absolutely advised for dirt roads in the rainy season. Potholes often take up the entire road and during the rainy season, large sections of the roads simply wash away. Some more rural roads will even become completely impassable.

As with any roads through rural areas you must always be observant of pedestrians and animals wandering onto roads, as well as prepare for a lack of road lighting.

Kindly be aware of your vehicle speed at all time and please do NOT overload the vehicle! Most of the ‘roads’ are unmade tracks and the tarmac too is seriously potholed or has hidden dips, enough to take out any suspension.

Drive very carefully (30Kph) through the villages.
People, particularly children, are less aware of vehicles than elsewhere and step out without notice. Added to poor cycling skills and no road sense is alcohol abuse which can lead to very dangerous situations.

  • Drive extremely carefully at night, try to avoid this as much as possible is our advice! Many vehicles have no rear lights – sometimes no lights at all - and neither do the cyclists, elephants or hippos. When you see tree branches on the road, it usually means there is a broken down vehicle, an accident, road works or you are near a funeral. For the latter you are expected to slow right down (1st gear) and switch on your indicators to pay respect to the deceased.
  • Should you not know how to jack up a vehicle to change a tire, then maybe a self-drive trip into remote areas might not be for you. We will ask about your experiences in 4x4 driving and reserve the right to say "no"! Trust us a self-drive is not for everyone. Driving in Africa is different and distances in miles or kilometeres mean not much.
  • Should you expect fancy kitted vehicles, then you better look elsewhere.
  • Should you be in a rush, and have a fixed, non flexible schedule? Then travelling in Africa might not be for you. Getting lost, asking for directions or being covered in dust whilst changing a flat tire is all part of the adventure. So take your time and enjoy the ride, both literal as figural speaking. It is was travel is all about.

More than 30% of Zambia is reserved for wildlife. There are 20 national parks and 34 game management areas in the country. South Luangwa, Kafue and Lower Zambezi rank among the finest national parks in the world.

And what about the more seasonal parks?
Kasanka, if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of a rare shoebill stork, but more famous for an astonishing bat migration with literally millions of fruit bats arriving from October every year.

Or Liuwa plains; boosting the second largest blue wildebeest migration on earth (after the Serengeti-Mara migration, of course, but without the crowds and vehicles).

So choosing which one to go to for your safari is a pretty hard job. Let us assist, based on your initial ideas and give you insider tips to come to a safari of a life-time!
